In 1994, Crystal launched a pioneering initiative aimed at providing high-net-worth investors and smaller institutions with diversified exposure to the emerging asset class of alternative investments. The principles of this framework drew inspiration from David Swensen's "Yale Model," commonly known today as the "endowment model." Through this strategic approach, Crystal established a fund of hedge funds and solidified its position as an early investor in many of today’s prominent alternative investment managers.
Crystal began as a traditional "one size fits all" fund of funds. However, the Great Financial Crisis exposed inherent risks associated with this model. As a result of the crisis, investors in traditional funds faced significant challenges related to liquidity. In this structure, all investors share the same assets and liquidity, which can lead to fund-level gates and liquidity delays during crises.
In 2007, the unique challenges in the financial sector provided Crystal with a pivotal opportunity to revolutionize the conventional fund of funds model. Recognizing the critical need for customization and the issues posed by high entry barriers, Crystal evolved from a standard, one-size-fits-all, approach to a customizable, fund of funds solution that effectively meets the diverse needs of financial intermediaries and their investors.
Today, drawing on three decades of institutional alternative investing experience, Crystal’s centralized system manages over 600 diversified, multi-manager portfolios with segregated liquidity—the modern fund-of-funds model. Through this centralized system, we’ve enabled advisors to conduct rigorous fund due diligence, create diversified portfolios, and manage multiple investment exposures across multiple clients in a scalable and streamlined way.
As Crystal has evolved, its core founding principles remain. By providing financial intermediaries with a robust digital front/back-office framework, Crystal enables its clients to replicate the diversified alternative investment models of the largest university endowments and manage them throughout their entire lifecycles.
The modern fund of funds platform provides an arsenal of crucial tools that include client-facing deliverables, portfolio optimization technology, portfolio rebalancing capabilities, analytics, ongoing research, and a streamlined investment process that was once tedious and fragmented — a one-stop package designed to help advisors educate and easily bring this unique institutional asset class to their clients.
This year, Crystal is celebrating thirty years of its alternatives journey. With a team of over twenty dedicated professionals—many of whom have been with the firm since the early 2000s—Crystal has firmly established itself as a premier gateway to the trillion-dollar institutional private markets and hedge fund sectors. Its extensive network includes nearly 250 independent advisory firms, such as RIAs, BDs, family offices, foundations, and regional banks. Today, partner capital accounts for a significant amount of the firm’s assets under management, underscoring the firm’s alignment of interests with its investors.
